Basic Classical Ragas for Beginners to learn

Small intro on Classical Ragas

I am going to cover basic classical Ragas to play on Harmonium for beginners. I will share basic details you need to know about these Ragas. These classical Ragas are mainly covered in 'प्रारंभिक' and प्रवेशिका  प्रथम ( Beginner levels) examinations taken by concerned authorities. I will explain these Raga's details in Marathi.

Lets have a look at these classical ragas with the help of following points.


1) Raag Bhoop- 

Firstly let's learn about one of the basic classical Ragas, भूप.  Details of the Raag are as follows. It also represents devotional attitude (भक्तीरस). Very easy and sweet Raga to play for beginners. The famous marathi Songs for e.g. अबीर गुलाल उधळीत रंग, देहाची तिजोरी   based on this Raga.

थाट- कल्याण 

वर्ज स्वर - म  आणि नी 

वादी  स्वर -ग 

संवादी स्वर - ध

जाती - ओडव-ओडव

गायन समय - रात्रीचा पहिला प्रहर 

आरोह आणि अवरोह  सा रे ग प ध सां, सां ध प ग रे सा 

2) Raag Bhairav- 

Secondly, lets know about Raag Bhairav. This is one of the popular and classical Ragas to sung and play on Harmonium. It shows serious as well as devotional attitude. It is sung early in the morning. 

थाट - भैरव 

जाती - संपूर्ण 

कोमल स्वर- रे आणि ध

वादी  स्वर - ध (कोमल स्वर )

संवादी स्वर- रे (कोमल स्वर )

आरोह- सा रे ग म प ध नी सां  अवरोह- सां नी ध प म ग रे सां (ध आणि रे कोमल ) 

3) Raag Bhimpalasi (भीमपलास )-

Thirdly, lets learn about Bhimpalasi. This Raag is in Kafi thaat. Many popular songs in Hindi, Marathi and English too are based on this Raag. For e.g. Tum mile dil khile, Naino mein badara Chhaye in Hindi; in Marathi अमृताहुनी गोड नाम तुझे देवा; in English Ed sheeran's Shape of you is also based on scale of this Raag. आरोहात रे आणि ध वर्ज 

वादी- म 

संवादी - सां 

जाती - ओडव-संपूर्ण 

गायन समय - दिवसाचा दुसरा प्रहर 

आरोह - नी सा ग म प नी सां  अवरोह - सां नी ध प म ग रे सा (ग आणि  नी कोमल )

4) Raag Yaman-  

This Raag is from Kalyan Thhat. Sakhi yeri aayi Piya bin Bandish is popular. it is often covered by many western singers too. Beautiful songs like Zara si Aahat hoti hai, Ghar se Nikalte hi are based on this Raag. To conclude, its a beautiful raaga.

वादी- ग 

संवादी - नी 

जाती- संपूर्ण

गायन समय - रात्रीचा पहिला प्रहर

आरोह, अवरोह  - Nee Re Ga Ma Dh Ni Sa, Sa Nee Dh Pa Ma Ga Re Saa 

या रागामध्ये म  स्वर तीव्र आहे.
